Monster Hunter World 3.0: Kulve Taroth Update

Kulve Taroth Elder Dragon
On the 19th of April 2018, Capcom released it's 2nd major update or DLC which adds a limited-time monster "Kulve Taroth", a new elder dragon. It will be available until May 3 and may return again in the future as Capcom cycles through event quests. The news for the update came in a day or two before the actual release and this why we love the developers of Monster Hunterr World. They strive to give us new and great content in such a short amount of time at zero cost. The Devil May Cry collab is also coming out on the 27th of April, what a great time to be a part of the Monster Hunter community. I am currently busy with work so I was unable to explore the new features much but I will be updating this article regularly as I progress to help out those who are new or looking to get a grasp on the new quest's mechanics and rewards. Apologies for the delay, dear reader.

[1.0] Version 3.0 Patch Details


Before you dive into the main quest, be sure to check the following changes as some will have drastic changes to our hunter lives and the current meta. These changes are here to stay. The info below is taken from the official website. Bug fixes also found there. The list is long so I am trying to minimize the details in this article to cover only the most important ones.

Required disk space for update: around 1.2 GB

  • An Interface menu and an option called HUD/Help Text Size have been added under the Options menu on the title screen. You can now adjust HUD text size to be larger than the default size.
  • To go along with this new option, the "Subtitle Text Size" option added in PS4 Ver 2.00/Xbox One 2.0.0.0 has been moved from the in-game options menu to the title screen options menu.
  • A feature to sort investigations has been added to the Manage Investigations screen.
  • You can now sell all Trade-in Items at once when selling items.
  • Pressing the Square button on PS4 or X button on Xbox One allows you to switch between the Decoration name and Skill name when setting decorations.
  • You can now preview armor at the Smithy even with Layered Armor equipped
  • An update has been made to squad management so players who haven't logged in for 30 days aren't automatically kicked from the squad.
  • A tweak has been made so the camera is not forced to follow an active Scoutfly trail when fast traveling or returning to camp after fainting.
  • You can now cultivate Ivy at Botanical Research.
  • If a field researcher with important dialogue is present during an Expedition, an exclamation mark (!) will be displayed beside that character's name on the World Map when departing.
  • The Search Via Play History description text has been reworded to be easier to understand. The function itself has not changed.
    • Previous: Search for an Online Session that you joined based on your play history.
    •  Now: Search for an Online Session based on your play history. (Cannot find a previous met player if they've left the Online Session.
  • Flash Pod effectiveness against Tempered Monsters will gradually decline after multiple uses, and will cease to have any effect at all after a certain point. To coincide with the Tempered Monster's increased resistance to flash pods, the special rewards from Tempered Monster Investigations have been reworked to produce better results.
    • Threat Level 1 Special Rewards will now produce Warped Feystones.
    • Threat Level 2 Special Rewards will now produce Shining Streamstones.
    • Threat Level 3 Special Rewards will produce Shining Streamstones more frequently.

Some thoughts...

The above changes are actually good and convenient. I actually like the flashpod change as this will be a new challenge for us rather than simply spamming these things. It takes around 4-6 flashpods before the monster builds up immunity to it. Teostra and Kushala must've complained to the developers. Threat Level 1 tempered monster investigations are also now worth farming, I tend to delete these on my list before and I regret it as I had some 4 reward boxes. Ivy has been added to the list of items we can cultivate on the botanical research which is an essential material for crafting nets into pitfall traps which was initially a pain to farm in good amounts. Other changes are mostly for visual or navigational convenience purposes. Use R3 to sort investigations. For the drop rates, I had an article in the past here but need to write a new one to reflect these changes once I obtain the necessary information.

[2.0] The Caverns of El Dorado and Kulve Taroth Siege


Now here comes the best part of this update! Kulve Taroth is a new monster to the series and it's golden. Literally. It kind of reminds me of Egyptian god statues but sometimes looks like a giant golden Great Jagras with goat horns as other people see it. However, don't underestimate it as it also packs quite a punch and the new map has environmental hazards in the form of lava and annoying golden Gajalakas. Bringing your fireproof mantle and stacking fire resistance is a good idea. To understand this and help out new players, let's discuss the details.

2.1...New Endemic Life and Mining Crops

This is the new map specifically accessible only for the Kulve Taroth Siege quest. Be sure to capture some new endemic life pets here which are:
Copper Calappa
Shiny Calappa (Rare) - usually appears on where Kulve Taroth digs out on the first area
Gold Helmcrab
Shiny Gold Helmcrab (Rare) - on the area with sunlight, see screenshot
Tsuchinoko (Rare) - has a chance to pop out of mining outcrops, but can be found on top area (see screenshot)

There are also some mining outcrops from which you can obtain some materials for crafting the new golden gears.

2.2...Kulve Taroth Siege Mechanics

The actual quest is found in the Gathering Hub (Celestial Pursuit).  At least Hunter Rank 16 is required meaning you have to finish the story first since HR is capped at 15 until you defeat Xeno'Jiiva. In order to trigger this, go out on an expedition and collect Kulve Taroth tracks. Maybe only 1 track is needed which are easy to identify marked as "???" and are chipped pieces of gold. I personally went to the Elder's Recess and found 1 to 2 tracks near the first camp.

After getting those tracks, go back to Astera and talk to the Admiral marked with a blue exclamation point(!) in the map. This will trigger the cutscene with the council. After this go to the Gathering Hub and you're all set for fun.

The quest has a specific option to it named as Kulve Taroth Siege. Either initiate it or join other existing quests. You can form a party with the usual 4 members. A maximum of 16 players can work together to hasten the progress. You will not see the other 12 players in the map but the rewards and points obtained for breaking parts or reaching certain goals are shared. So basically, the number of parties may vary but will ultimately only have a maximum of 4 members each and 16 players all in all.

You can join the quest anytime even if it is in progress but you cannot use the SOS flare for this one. You have to post or join specifically in the Gathering Hub. For those who are asking, PS Plus membership is required to play online and the quest is scaled for 16 players so even if it is technically possible to solo it if you are good enough, else it might not end up well or take a lot of time. Although it appears do-able with a single 2-4 member party. The difference might only be on how long you can complete the quest. This is Capcom's way of bringing together Monster Hunter World's players and a good way to utilize the Gathering Hub's features. It feels refreshing to actually see and interact with other players in the game without the need to fight in an actual quest.
I will try to make this as simple as possible for better understanding. There are factors that you need to keep in mind to be successful: Research Level, and more importantly Pursuit Level and Rewards Level. The main goal is to break Kulve Taroth's Horns. If you are unable to deal enough damage in a given time, the monster will escape. The Pursuit and Rewards level goes up as you do the quest multiple times so don't worry if you initially fail to break the horns. It will get easier as these levels go up.


Research Level
Like all monsters, always collect Kulve Taroth tracks for faster scoutfly leveling and unlocking information on the monster field guide.

Pursuit Level
To increase the levels you need to collect Kulve Taroth traces. Pursuit level will eventually increase after accumulating a certain amount of points. All the players in the same session can contribute to pursuit points. The highest is level 6. The higher the Pursuit Level the better chance at breaking parts, scoutfly guidance and time Kulve Taroth stay's in one area.

Reward Level
There are certain conditions or objectives that you need to accomplish to increase reward level. Conditions can be viewed on the options as seen on the screenshot below on the upper right. Obviously, the higher the Reward level the better the rewards. The max level is 17.

Once the horns are successfully broken and Siege is completed, the Reward and Pursuit levels will go back to level 1.

2.3...Rewards and New Equipment

The maximum rewards that can be obtained are on the screenshot below. These may be materials and weapons with varying attributes. Initially we thought these were random but that was not the case. For a full list of weapons that can be obtained refer to this spreadsheet Kulve Weapons Sheet. It appears to be a work-in-progress as players update it upon obtaining the different weapons. Kulve Armor Alpha & Beta

Once you have enough materials you can now craft the Kulve armors. The set really looks good and the skills are very useful. My favorite is the Chest and Waist armors as they have Crit Boost and Handicraft. Pretty neat huh? The chest piece also has Stun Resistance. I really love it. You can carve additional materials from the horns. You can also receive "Bushi Tickets" from the rewards which can be used for Samurai Palico Armor or Layered Armor for your hunter.

Layered Armor

To obtain the new Layered Armor sets, you have to deliver the "Bushi Tickets" to the Resource Center. Along with certain materials and research points, you can exchange them for the Homare or Sabi Layered Armor. The set pieces are in the following order: Head, Chest, Arms, Waist, Legs.

2.4...Tips

  • The map also has new mining spots which give materials needed for the new golden armors. Don't miss them out.
  • Scattered along the map are wedge beetles, cannons and ballistas, use them to your advantage to be able to deal huge amount of damage to Kulve Taroth. The monster can be mounted.
  • Be mindful of the environment, look for rocks that can be shot down to deal damage to the monster and knock her down
  • The quest is all about breaking Kulve Taroth's parts, thus, skills like Partbreaker comes into mind. You can also use x  that increases ballista/cannon damage and y that increases movement speed when carrying the cannonballs.
  • Dragon Piercer Bow builds are very much welcome in this quest. The monster's length and size makes a crispy dragon piercer when timed and aimed correctly. Insect Glaive users will be effective as they can easily reach the horns with their aerial attacks. Hunting Horn users will be appreciated as the buffs are really powerful especially when working as a full party. But I guess just pretty much use whatever you are comfortable with, just don't die, the quest has a 3-faint threshold. Here's a sample siege run, not the best run but I was having a bit fun with the bow:
  • Bombs seem to do more damage than that of other monsters, good time to set them up on her face once she gets knocked down from mounting, boulders, etc.
  • f**** Gajalaka's can be a pain in the ass, use your crystalburst slinger ammo to take them down in one shot, sorry if I only found out earlier ugh
  • It's weaknesses are Thunder(***) and Dragon elements(**). When covered in gold, Ice becomes ineffective (x) and Dragon drops to (*), Thunder then becomes (***) which is ineffective when not covered in gold.

  2. Hi! I found a rare endemic creature in this area, a Tsuchinoko, a flat snake from Japanese myth.

  3. Hi, thanks for the detailed post. All 4 tsuchinoko I've caught so far were all found at cannons but at different locations from the closest one to the camp to the one before Area 2. Hope this'll help those who are still looking for it.

    1. Hi man, thanks for the extra tip, I sadly wasn't able to find it near those cannons thus my screenshot only had that of the high areas using a mandragora spot as a marker. Hope they find it, took me some time I guess I was unlucky haha.
